How often do you ask yourself, “Am I doing everything I can to make sure that my laptop computer will last?”  In this article I will discuss several methods for maximizing the lifespan of your laptop or other portable computer.   Some of the advice I’m giving is best practiced from when you first start using the computer, but it can be applied at any point during its life.

Heat and high performance graphics on laptops

Recently we have seen a large increase in thermal problems on laptops that have high performance graphics chipsets.  In particular, laptops that are using the 8400M and 8600M chipsets based on the Nvidia G84 and G86 GPUs.  Nvidia did acknowledge these faults last year, but claimed the problem only affected a small amount of graphics processor units (GPUs).

Video DVDs on Windows when you have codec errors

Sometimes with a vanilla install of Windows XP or Vista you may find that the codecs to play your DVD are not present.  You may receive an error message that it cannot locate the proper codec and the DVD won’t play.  This can be frustrating because you may not have a commercial DVD player application on hand.
